Winter is a magical time in Glacier National Park. The park is quiet and there are few plowed roads during winter. The only maintained roads are Apgar Village area, 11 miles of the Going-to-the-Sun Road on the western side to Lake McDonald Lodge and a mile and a half on the east side to St. Mary Campground.
Popular ranger-led snowshoe walks are available on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the winter. Tours depart from Apgar Visitor Center and last two hours. Snowshoes are available for rent at the Visitors Center or you can bring your own.
The hosted tours depart at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday January 9 through March 20 (weather permitting). For more detailed information, visit the National Park Service website.
For those that don’t mind cold weather, free auto camping is available at Apgar Picnic Area and St. Mary Campground. If solitude is what you’re after, backcountry camping is available with a permit. Consult the Park Service for up to date winter information.
Glacier National Park is a quick 25 miles east of Grouse Mountain Lodge, Whitefish, accessed via highway US-2.
